Shadowhunters Teaser Trailer & Casting Thoughts (Coming Jan 2016)

This post will be a little different to my usual style of post, but I really wanted to share my thoughts with you guys on this topic, for I know a lot of you, like myself, are big fans of The Mortal Instruments book series.

Yesterday, a ‘teaser trailer’ was released via Snapchat (very modern) to give the public a taste of what the show has to offer. You can watch said trailer below.

⋘The Trailer⋙

⋘My Thoughts⋙

So there it is, and, frankly, this has only made me more excited for the show! This is a definite area of contention, however, for fans of the book series, a lot of people believing it looks too teen-oriented and tacky. Nevertheless, I stand by my opinion that it offers a great starting ground for the show, for it doesn’t reveal too much about the plot line or contents (if you’re new to the show), and so will engage a wider audience than it currently has.

*If you intend on reading the books, or watching the show, avoid this section for there will be spoilers!

The trailer opens with a few shots of Clary and Simon (Clary blowing out candles on a birthday cake), from the very beginning marking how strong their friendship was before Jace and the introduction into the Shadowhunter world. I think this is really important, for people commonly forget the friendship between Clary and Simon has spanned so many years, and it’ll be great to see that friendship from the very beginning, especially since – in my opinion – the movie played down the friendship a lot, and focussed more on Simon’s crush.

It is here that Clary says “When I turned 18…” A lot of members of the fandom were rather opposed to the age change from 16 to 18 when it was first announced, however I feel as though it works with the amount of freedom Clary has within the books. It is definite that I wouldn’t – nor do I know anyone that would – cope with what Clary does at the age of 16, so I feel as though the change is appropriate.

Next, we’re introduced to Magnus, with a voice over of Clary saying: “I discovered the truth about the world.” I actually laughed when I saw this bit, because I think the way they did this is really clever, as Magnus appears to be pimp, making it seem as though Clary is discovering prostitution, not the Downworld. The background music is also quite relative to that in a club, again exaggerating a party life, making it seem as though Shadowhunters is about a girl’s discovery of sex, drugs and alcohol rather than Warlocks, Vampires, and Werewolves.

However, there is then a quick transition into Clary stood in a dark alleyway, with Jace jumping from the darkness. Metaphorically, it’s as if Jace is jumping from his darkness into Clary’s light, which I really like. Literally, though, Jace appears to be the saviour with a dark side, which I also really like, as it depicts Jace in a very honest way to the books. Also, because he’s waving a sword about, it suddenly becomes apparent to the new audience that Shadowhunters is not you typical coming-of-age show, and doesn’t focus on your typical teenager’s problems, but is actually a little more complicated than that.

Then, of course, Jace fights the monsters, saving Clary. Rather than grateful, or lovestruck, though, Clary simply appears confused. Frankly, the facial expressions are not perfect in this segment.

After comes Alec, ready with his bow and arrow, swiftly followed by Isabelle and her whip. I really like how the creators chose to showcase all of the characters, and put more emphasis on them than the movie creators chose to, because they are such an important part of the story and deserve to be acknowledged. Also, because Alec and Isabelle are so important in terms of messages to the audience – Alec being gay, and Isabelle representing strong, independent women – it’s great that they’ll be big characters from the start.

“And some people have a dark side,” says Clary, walking with Jace, until the screen changes to Simon in what looks like the Hotel Dumort. “Really dark.”

I’m unsure here as to whether Clary is supposed to be referring to Jace or Simon, for Jace definitely has a tainted past, but Simon is wiping blood off his chin. (!!!)

A lot of people were in cahoots, due to the assumption that Season 1 was only set to explore City of Bones, and here Simon is wiping blood from his mouth, as shouldn’t happen until Season 2 if said assumptions were correct. However, personally, it’ll be great to see even more action!

Then, Luke appears, slightly out of context, but nevertheless, he is there, which is again good, because the central circle of characters generally includes him through most of the books.

“I also discovered that whatever your destiny is…it will find you.”

Cue confused Clary, Clary with a sword, Clary with Jace, Alec with Magnus (!), Isabelle running, Clary blowing out candles again, forming the cyclical teaser trailer for ABC Family’s (or Freeform’s) Shadowhunters, concluding with Jace, Clary, Alec and Isabelle overlooking NYC.

⋘Casting Opinions⋙

Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray

Katherine McNamara - November 2014 (cropped).jpgKat is 19, and so very age-appropriate to the role of Clary, who is 18 in Shadowhunters. Personally, Kat doesn’t look like my typical Clary, but with her hair dyed ginger, and dressed up in all of her gear in the trailer, it really hit me how perfect she really is to be Clary, and I believe she will be very good in the role.

Also, her hair is dyed to look a very natural ginger, which I am very thankful for, as I had fears it would be dyed a garish, vibrant red, which wouldn’t be very Clary-esk at all.

Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland

Ever since this was announced, and still, I’ve been apprehensive as to whether I like Dom as Jace. Of course, he’s attractive, and blonde, very much like Jace, but I can’t at all see him as Jace, if that makes sense. In my opinion, he looks a little too put together, old (25, presumably playing a 19-year-old), and lacking golden curls. Personally, Jamie Campbell Bower, from the movie adaptation, was my perfect looking Jace, however he didn’t portray Jace very well, for me. Hopefully, though, Dom will be all the Jace Jamie wasn’t.

Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis

Perfect! This casting, for me, is absolutely perfect. Alberto absolutely screams Simon to me! Especially with the glasses, and despite being Hispanic, he looks exactly as I imagined Simon to in the books.

Primarily, a lot of uproar began once it was announced some Hispanic actors would be introduced, but I think the whole fandom agrees that Alberto simply is Simon. Hopefully he’ll play Simon as well as he looks like him!

Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood

Isabelle is a very important character in the books, EmeraudeToubia.jpgand Emeraude, like Alberto, looks just as I imagined her. Long, dark hair, a little mysterious, drop-dead gorgeous. Yep, all boxes checked.

Emeraude, like a lot of the cast, isn’t very well known. Personally, I think having a cast formed from quite small actors is great because:

a) It absolutely will make the life of this cast in terms of future roles and money.

b) New talents have been discovered. Win win!

Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood

Another perfect casting! Matthew is extremely attractive – in my personal opinion – and looks, again, just as I imagined Alec to.

Similar to Isabelle, Alec is a very important character in terms of lessons to learn from the show, for he is an LGBTQ character, which will definitely aid a lot of viewers, especially as he is the first shadowhunter to ‘come out’ as gay.

Also, he looks perfect beside Magnus!

Harry Shum, Jr. as Magnus Bane

Ever since Step Up 2, and even more so since Harry Shum by Gage Skidmore.jpgGlee, I have loved Harry Shum, Jr., and I believe he will make a fantastic Magnus. The images of Magnus in the trailer portray him so utterly well, and so true to the book, it’s unbelievable.

Unlike Alec, Magnus is openly LGBTQ, which offers a really nice contrast to Alec. And, as aforementioned, they look perfect together!

Harry Shum, Jr. is a fantastic actor, and I thoroughly believe he will do Magnus justice.

⋘What do you think?⋙

Have you read the Mortal Instruments series? If so, what do you think of the trailer and casting? Will you be watching the show?

If you haven’t read the Mortal Instruments, does the trailer appeal to you? Do you think it’ll be a good show?

      1. True, it seems like they’ve done it all fairly quickly. I think they edited while shooting, which sped up things rather than doing all the editing afterwards. They had their last shooting day 2 days ago or something like that, I bet it was one heck of a wrapping party 😀
